How did you know you wanted to be a professional photographer?

Professional photographer sounds so stuffy! I prefer visual humanist, family historian, and storyteller. I love stories and  I am obsessed with characters, details and happy endings. For me, photography represents time frozen on paper and in pixels.  I never really set out to become a photographer. I worked as a TV producer and a radio broadcaster and throughout working the creative media field — storytelling has been the common thread. I first started shooting professionally in the late 90s, after a friend praised my black and white film work at their wedding. Photography found me somehow and now I can’t imagine life without a camera in hand.

What do you think distinguishes you from every other professional photographer?

Just as every human on the face of this planet has unique DNA, every photographer has their own vision. You can place the exact same lens, camera, subject and lighting situation in front of 20 photographers — and you will still get 20 different points of view.
My studio motto is “Shooting with open eyes, an open mind and an open heart.”  My take on the world is that everyone is beautiful and there is art in everybody. It’s my job to capture beauty and truth in an image and captured honestly. My goal is to remind the viewer of what matters: life is precious and should be valued and savored.

You specialize in a type of photography called “Beloved.” Can you tell us what that means?

Beloved photography is a new genre of photography which celebrates the relationship of love. The approach is largely experiential, with the process of having images taken as important as the photographic art itself.  Most clients recognize something in my images that resonate with something deep within them. It might be that smiles are more genuine, eyes are twinkling and there’s an element of je ne sais quoi.
I think what sets my photos apart is that my subjects are having a good time. They open themselves to me. Then I am able to effectively and honestly capture who they are on film, not just what they look like.
